Vol. 3 What's your energy like?
🌶️ Spicy thoughts loading...
Do you ever feel like… once I get someone on a call, it’s pretty easy to sell them, but it’s finding people and getting people on calls that’s the issue?
In this newsletter, we’re going to have a little heart to heart about this.
In the most recent workshops series I had a couple people say they didn’t have problems with sales, but they had difficulty finding clients. And in today's climate… I related a bit to that.
Here's my loving kick in the pants.
are you putting yourself out there?
are you hitting the pavement? are you… for lack of a better word, hustling?
Cause if you need clients, you can’t afford to sit here and complain about this. it’s time to essentially throw spaghetti at the wall. You may not have the luxury of niching, or being super selective, or only marketing on one platform.
However, don’t let that deter you from having standards. If you get a bad feeling about someone, listen to that.
Or from putting in the needed consistency and effort. Don’t use this as an excuse to do a little bit everywhere and therefore not show up enough anywhere.
This might mean going ALL in on TWO platforms: a local one and an online one.
A BNI Chapter AND LinkedIn.
a Chamber of Commerce group AND Upwork.
And be consistent and ACTIVE on both.
This might also require you to get way out of your comfort zone.
Yes, once you secure clients, you can hide behind your computer, but if the thought of going out and having conversations with strangers makes your skin crawl and you just aren’t even willing to try… your corporate job might be better for you.
I’ve seen a lot of victim mentality lately (not just in our industry) but in my local area with small business owners, acting like all the other businesses and people in the community owe them something.
No one asked them to open up a brick & mortar shop, yet they’re complaining loudly in local facebook groups about how the community doesn’t support them and they’re struggling to stay open.
Don’t be that person.
Most likely, no one is asking you to open up a bookkeeping business—so don’t make it anyone else’s responsibility to bring you business.
Unless your community and network did tell you to, and not just one person, but many—in which case, you’re probably too busy to be listening to this episode. And if one person did tell you to open a bookkeeping business, all of this still applies.
Do the work. Champion your business. TALK ABOUT WHAT YOU DO to anyone who will listen. it’s still your responsibility to make this work.
Get creative… don’t wait for me or anyone else to tell you what to do to get clients (although I do share lots of ways in almost every Q&A episode of my podcast).
It all comes down to being where your ideal clients are. and yes… there are a lot of people doing bookkeeping.
Some might argue our industry is saturated.
but here’s some stats for you….
There are 34.8 million small businesses in the United States as of the end of 2024 (SBA.gov)
There are 1.29 million small businesses in Canada (Government of Canada)
There are hundreds of industries to choose from as your niche when you look at the NAICS code lookup - this site even shows you how many of each are in that category.
Now go out there and do the work. Just because you build it, does not mean they'll come.
