Now let's dive into some highlights!

Is There Still a Future in Bookkeeping with all the Automation Happening?

This excellent question came from Zachary, who has an impressive foundation - an associate's degree in business, numerous certifications including QuickBooks, Microsoft Excel, and accounting clerk/assistant certifications. Despite these qualifications, he turned away from accounting because he was concerned about automation taking over the industry.

The Human Touch in a Digital World

Let me be crystal clear: Yes, there is absolutely still a future in bookkeeping! While automation is changing our industry, it's not replacing us - it's evolving our role.

Here's the truth: Software and AI can only do so much. At the end of the day, businesses need real people with real expertise to:

  • Interpret the numbers
  • Offer strategic insights
  • Help them stay compliant
  • Provide that irreplaceable personal touch

Business owners don't just want data - they want someone standing by their side, reassuring them they're on the right track. Relationships matter more than ever in this digital age!

Three Pathways to Thrive in Modern Bookkeeping

If you're wondering how to position yourself for success in today's bookkeeping landscape, here are my top recommendations:

1. Focus on Advisory and Client Relationships

Don't just do data entry (that's what automation handles best). Instead, position yourself as a trusted advisor who helps business owners understand their financials and how those numbers translate to real business operations.

And don't let terms like "strategic advisor" intimidate you! Being a trusted advisor simply means partnering with business owners, being their sounding board, helping them research options, and offering side-by-side guidance. This human element can never be fully automated.

2. Find Your Niche

Whether you're going out on your own or working for another business, specialization is key. Consider focusing on more complex industries like e-commerce or real estate, or become an expert in specific software solutions. This specialization will help you stand out and attract the right opportunities.

3. Leverage Your Technical Skills

Your background in accounting and information systems is a huge asset! Today's businesses need bookkeepers who understand automation tools, workflow optimization, and cloud-based solutions. The future belongs to those who can bridge the gap between traditional accounting and modern technology.

My Challenge to You

If you're considering a career in remote bookkeeping, start having conversations - both with professionals already in the industry and with small business owners. Find out what their pain points are and what they value in a bookkeeping relationship.
